1945 saw the end of history’s most devastating conflict.

1. Fall of Germany
#

Allies from the west, Soviets from the east. Hitler committed suicide on 30 April 1945. Germany surrendered on 7-8 May (V-E Day).

2. Peace Conferences
#

Yalta (February 1945): Germany divided into 4 zones, democratic governments, creation of the UN. Potsdam (July-August 1945): reparations, denazification, war crimes trials.

3. Atomic Bombs and Japan’s Surrender
#

Hiroshima (6 August) and Nagasaki (9 August). Japan surrendered on 15 August. Formal surrender on 2 September — end of WWII.

4. The New World Order
#

Two superpowers (USA and USSR), divided Europe (“Iron Curtain”), the UN, decolonization, Nuremberg Trials, Marshall Plan.


Conclusion
#

The end of WWII brought freedom but also new divisions. The defense of democracy, human rights and peace can never be taken for granted.
